States with Tate

The name comes from my grandmother, who loved to proudly put me on the spot: “Julie, show them the stuff you make.” And she wasn’t wrong — I’ve always been creating, just in whatever form my hands and heart were excited about in that season. After becoming a mom at the start of COVID, I walked through a heavy season of postpartum depression and anxiety and felt like the joyful, imaginative girl in me had gone quiet. Finding my way back to drawing, painting, and creating for the pure love of it helped me heal and reconnect with myself. Now I make art with one steady purpose: to reflect identity, emotion, pride, softness, strength, and joy — and to help people feel understood, celebrated, and at home in who they are.

Alex Pretti’s final words, “Are you okay?” spoken as he leaned toward someone who had been hurt are so beautiful because they embody the basic human instinct to check on one another, to care before we judge or retreat. In a moment of danger and fear, he didn’t ask about blame or even attempt retaliation against the perpetrators, he simply stood in her stead and asked his neighbor if she was alright, reminding us that compassion is our strongest social glue and that rebuilding community begins with these small acts of empathy and presence. And just days earlier, Renee Good’s last words, “I’m not mad at you,” carried that same grace in the face of fear and violence, offering understanding rather than bitterness and showing us that even in our darkest moments, gentleness and connection will always outshine division. Both phrases teach us that looking out for one another through tenderness, concern, and is how we propagate beauty and stitch back the bonds of community that sustain us all.

From January 28th until February 27th, 100% of the profit from Julie's "Are you okay?" sales will go directly to non-profits serving and loving their neighbors in Minneapolis
